Victoria Baths
Victoria Baths is grade II listed and is located in a prominent position on Southport’s seafront promenade.
The original building complex was completed in 1871 on the site of an earlier smaller baths building. The front external elevations are clad in ashlar sandstone in the ‘French Empire’ style.
The building complex originally had six swimming baths which drew water from the sea via an impressive and (then) technologically advanced system of pumps, filtering beds, pipework, tanks and heating systems. The building remained in this use until the late 1970’s. It was altered at various points during this time, predominantly around 1910 and again in the 1920’s when the southern zone was extended at first floor and refurbished.
Ian Bright Architects was appointed by Sefton Council to undertake a building fabric condition survey of Victoria Baths, Southport, in order to inform a future strategy for the conservation and reuse of the building.
